Sahih Muslim is one of the Sunni major hadith collections. The Shia Muslims have dismissed this as unauthentic. This is collected by Imam Muslim. Prophet Muhammed’s sayings and deeds are called the Sunnah, and translated through the hadith. Imam travelled great distances to collect the ahadith. He went to Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt.

He extracted 300,000 hadith, but only 4000 of them were added into his collection. His collection was based upon acceptance criteria. The reports in his collection were checked for compatibility in the Koran. The chain of reporters too had to be established. Imam was a student of Bukhari and Ahmed. Imam never claimed to collect authentic traditions.

When he collected traditions, he wanted all Muslim people to agree on its accuracy. Besides Imam, there were other scholars who collected the traditions. The Sunni Muslims believe that the collection by Imam is the most authentic after the Bukhari collections. There seem to be a total of 2200 hadiths, without any repetition in the Sahih Muslim.

The total of the Bukhari and Imam collections then becomes 3000 in number. There are about 1400 authentic hadiths, according to hadith scholars. These have been reported in the other books, in the six major hadith collections. Imam belonged to the Qushayr tribe of the Arabs, an extension of the clan of Rabia. His parents were very religious and he was brought up in a pious environment.

This experience influenced him to be very religious all his life, and he was always seeking the path of righteousness. He was considered a Muslim saint of high caliber. He had an excellent moral character, which was quite different from all other people. Imam travelled a lot to collect traditions, and he attended a lot of lectures by prominent Muslim leaders.

He then met Bukhari in a city where he settled down after his learning. Bukhari was very impressed with his vast knowledge and asked him to be with his throughout his life. Imam also spent a lot of time with another great teacher of the hadith Muhammed. But he had differences with Buhkari about the creation of the Koran, and Imam left Muhammed.

The most important of his works is the collection of the sahih, though he wrote many books on the hadith. Many Muslim scholars feel that this is some of the best work on the hadith that was ever created. His creations are very interesting because he has created some great introductions to his work. Imam Muslim has contributed a lot to the Hadith literature.

In a lot of ways, Imam Muslim was superior to his teacher. He observed the science of the hadith more than his teacher. Imam had a lot of reliable sources through which he got the traditions. He considered them only authentic. He also had a wide circle of Muslim students, who learnt the hadith from him. Many of them occupy a very prominent face in the Muslim history. He spent most of his life learning the hadith.
