The Australian Muslims are about 1.5 percent of the entire Australian population. Islam is only the third largest religion in the country after Christianity and Buddhism. The history of the Muslims in Australia is very vague before the 19th century. Though there were some Muslims who came to the country before this time, their records have not be found very clearly.
There are hardly any traces of this Muslim group, who came along with the European settlement. A lot of camel trainers were brought into the country, from Muslim countries. The Australian settlement was not very good at handling camels, and they wanted to use them to explore the sand dunes in the country. These Muslim trainers came from various countries.
Later during time, many Muslim immigrants were stopped from entering the country, because the Australian government had passed a law. This law was based upon races, and they did not allow anyone other than fair skinned Muslims to enter the country. They wanted to maintain a very European feel to the culture of the nation.
This law became relaxed only after the Second World War. The government allowed more of the Muslim race to enter the country, as they thought there would be more scope for economic and social development. Though the government tried hard initially to maintain a single race in the country, they began accepting Muslim people into the country in the late 1900s.
This gave a lot of scope for multi cultural policy. True to the anticipation of the government, the Muslim community still talked of their home countries. To maintain a relationship with their countries, they began opening up trade between the two of them. This was a major turning point in the contribution of the Muslims to the country.
They played a major role in the export and import trade, and one of their main items of export was halal meat. By the time a few years had gone by, the Muslim population in Australia had grown a little, and they were Muslim immigrants from about sixty countries. The Muslim families who came to the country, preferred to stay in the cities rather than move to smaller cities.
Since Australia has very good universities, there are a lot of Muslim students from Asia in the nation. It is to be noted that not the entire Muslim population in the country is from the same ethnic groups. They are formed into small groups from various countries. There are sizable Muslim races from almost all the countries in the world.
The Australian Muslims are now a part of the country’s society. Right from the time, the trainers called Afghans were contributing in a way to the nation, all the other Muslims too began doing the same. A lot of Muslim individuals have chosen professions like law, medicine, science and trade activities. Today, the government has accepted this Muslim group, because they have been a major reason for the foreign exchange flowing into the country.
