The Muslim population in Australia touches about 1.5 percent of the entire country’s population. They are a significant number, and the count has reached more than 300,000. Many of them, or most of the Muslim people in the country live in Australian cities. About 25 percent of the Muslim population was unemployed a few years back in the country.

There has been a rise in the Muslim population since the Muslim immigrants first came to the country. The Muslims are all now in a vulnerable position, because they have been linked with certain crimes. T hey have also become a target after the 9// incidents, leaving everyone to speculate whether they would be leaving the country or not, to live in their home countries.

While in 1991, the Muslim population in Australia was about 0.9 percent , it increased to about 1.5 percent in 2001. The majority of the Muslim group in this country lives in Sydney and Melbourne. It all began in the mid 1900s when about 10,000 Turks became a part of the Australian community. They left straight to Sydney and settled there.

The Lebanese Muslims contributed a lot to the population of Muslims in Australia, when several of them fled their country due to the civil war in 1975. After the 1970s there was a significant rise in the Muslim population. This was the time when the immigration rules were relaxed for Muslim immigrants. The Muslims came from Indonesia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, India and several other countries.

The largest Muslim group in Australia is the Lebanese Muslims. They are at the core of the Arab Muslim population in the country. Somali Muslims too contribute to a good amount of the Muslim population, when they fled their country in 1991 during the civil war. The Arab Muslim population is centered around Sydney.

Many of them live in the suburb of Lakemba, and the surrounding areas. Melbourne has the second largest Muslim population in the country. In Sydney 3.4percent of the population consist of Muslims. The Muslims in Melbourne are mostly Turkish Muslims. There are also Albanian Muslims and Arab Muslims in the southern and northern surburbs of Melbourne.

 


Very few of the Muslim groups live in smaller towns. The Turkish and Albanian communities contribute to Victoria’s and Western Australia’s population. There is a good number of Muslims in Perth too. Many of these Muslims live in the suburb of Thornlie. There are sizeable Muslim societies from almost many of the countries in the world.

The Indonesian Muslims are the most widely distributed Muslim population in Australia. While the Muslim population in Australia has been under criticism for various reasons, they are still contributing in many ways to the Australian community. A majority of the Muslim population in the country seems to be under racist attacks, after several terrorism incidents.

This has not stopped the Muslim people of Australia from being part of the Australian community. They are participating in many events that are part of the Australian culture.
